Paper Custodian Builds Unadapted Steampunk Prosthesis (Merrci)

Today on the Paper Custodians workbench...

We have a papertoy from artist

Merrci!

We're building the
Unadapted Steampunk prosthesis
So, print yours out at the above link, and let's get started!

Well, as usual, we want to separate the pieces from the sheet.

From there, we refine the cuts.

We'll start scoring after we have all the parts cut.
Like my new score-board?

And now, after the scoring and folding, the gluing begins.

I cut the little tabs off, and rely on the larger tabs to seal the edge.

You can get a better look of the missing tabs here,
right under the sleeve.

Saves alot of hassle cutting off the little ones.
This technique does take some practice.
And more patience.

Opps!
We forgot to cut out the hole for the arm.
This happens a lot.

Dag nabbit!
We forgot to cut the hole for the neck, too!

Fortunately, it's nothing that can't be quickly remedied with
a little help from our X-acto blade.

Very nice.

If I do say so myself...

Let's move onto the head.
Score first...

But, let's not forget.
The hole for the neck.

Slice, slice here...

And, bing-O. Bang-O...

Commence with the gluing.

Are you kidding me?
Another one?!
Once again with the trusty ol' blade.

It's where the ear will go.

See?

Now, we see why we cut out those holes.
Head, neck and body.

Neck goes in body...

Head goes in neck.

Check out this guy!
Stylin, right?

Ahhhh...
but not without his pants.
What do we do first?
Score!

Fold and What?
Glue!
But, notice here, I cut off the little tabs again.

Almost done.
See where the tabs are missing?

Have some Class!
Pull yer' darned pants up, son!

We are nearing completion!
But, where are his arms?

Maybe in his backpack...
I did the tab thing here, too.
Clipped every other tab.
Paper has the ability to roll easily.
So if you're skilled, you can shape it with a few tabs.

See, Would I ever lead you astray?

Now, let's get this kid all suited up.
Just glue it to the big blank spot on his back.

Like so.

Could this be one of his arms?
Yet again, with the "less tabs" Technique.
Be the paper, shape the paper!

It's coming along.
Focus, tab-to-tab style!

half way there...
See the paper conforming?

Glue tab, the tuck it into the pocket that is formed.

The rest is going to slide inside the "cup".

Like a glove.

Make sure it's nice and snug.
Everything should be level.

Start gluing the tabs down and around.
Clip off any excess you may encounter.

It's a Shovel!

So, this must be an arm?
Let's discover together!
GOOOOAAAAALLL!
Oh, wait...I mean...
SCOOOOOOOOORE!

But, what is this?!
Almost had us that time.
Fool me once, Shame on me.
Fool me twice, Bob's yer' uncle!
A quick slice and dice.
(This is where the arm will go, *wink*)

Fold and glue
up and around

And....
Wait...Wheres the photo?
Oh, um, let's keep moving forward shall we?
This thing!

This is a good example of allowing paper to "be shaped".
Fold the paper around the tabs, creating a curve that is natural.
This is what paper craft is about!

These, we simply
Glue and Fold.

 Simple, right?

This will all come together.
You'll see.

The round part attaches to the shoulder.

To that we attach
the arm.

The attach the angular part to the shovel.
Which we will also attach to the arm.

This is the arm.
The other arm.
The not-steam-punk-but-quite-human-arm.

All you do is roll it up
and glue it closed.
You don't really have to glue it,
but, it helps.

Come on little guy!
You can do it!

We knew you could do it!
Hand and arm,
Shovel and shoulder!

But, it wouldn't be "steampunk" with out steam.
AmIRight.jpg?

Fold and glue

Amend and refine

This here piece is a steam pipe.
Allow me to show you...

Roll it up!

Glue the steam-stem and insert into the pipe

Let's get a little origami on this.
Oh yes, let's!
Fold, pinch and bend.

Glue to the back of our new little steampunk,
and
We are done!
I'll call him Otomo!
